Story:
When I was 30 years old, my 5-year-old son amused our family by saying that
he wanted to get a haircut like daddy. One with a "V" in front. (My hair
had started to recede to the point that the area above both temples was
balding and my traditional crew cut looked like a "V"). The other family
members were so amused by this that they encouraged our youngest to tell
every visitor to our house that he wanted to get a "V" haircut like daddy.
After a while I began to develop a program that worked for me for 30 years.
There was almost no more hair recession during that time. I let my hair
grow longer and had it cut less often with the thought that the cut ends
might leak useful nutrients. I had noticed that after a haircut some kind
of oily substance seemed to come out of my hair. It seemed possible that my
hair situation was similar to grass in the summer. You don't cut it short,
and this cause could be due to the fluids in the grass "bleeding out" at the
cut ends.
I also began scalp massage. A former college roommate had lived in China
and used some seemingly peculiar practices that he learned there. He stood
on his head for several minutes per day and brushed his hair vigorously one
hundred times while bending over until his head was as low as his heart. I
had watched with some restrained amusement while be went through the strange
ritual every day. But when my own hair was at risk, his practices came
quickly to mind, and I did the "brush vigorously" part.
I also began to limit the use of commercial shampoo which had been my daily
routine, used healthy shampoos, and reduced shampooing to about twice a
week. The reason for this was that the oils in the hair could be leached
out during shampooing. The commercial preparations were possibly harsher on
the hair.
My nutritional program was increased to add unsaturated fatty acids in
liquid form, liquid lecithin, a better multiple, trace minerals, and more
care with my diet. After 30 years, my hair did begin to get thin on top,
but I believe the situation would have been much worse, if I had not taken
action.
